Firefox taking over Internet Explorer

Postby TerraFrost » Mon Dec 19, 2005 9:13 am

Everytime I try to go to a specific URL by typing it in in Internet Explorer, the URL instead loads in Firefox. If multiple windows / tabs are open, it'll just open in the most recently used one. If none are open, a new one will be opened.

Same thing happens when I hit the "Home" button.

If, however, I just try to click a link or submit data via a webform (like google.com), I have no problems.

Anyway, this problem is very annoying. I may not use Internet Explorer on a frequent basis, but I do like to be able to test webpages I'm developing in it. This, unfortunately, is something I can't really do, at present. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't really know what to tell you, as that does not happen to me.

Have you tried posting this at the MozillaZine forums?

EDIT: Thinking about it for a second, and throwing something crazy out there, is Firefox set up as your default browser? It isn't for me, because there was no reason for me to change it. IE is pretty integrated into the Windows shell, so maybe that could be mucking it up? You could always set IE back to the default browser and see. Couldn't hurt to try.

Playing with the default browser settings doesn't seem to accomplish anything. I started a thread at the MozillaZine forums, though - thanks for the tip! :):

I anonymously submitted the following to slashdot.org:

As revealed by a recent flurry of posts on mozillaZine, Microsoft's Security Bulletin MS05-054 inadvertently causes URLs typed in Internet Explorer to instead load in Mozilla Firefox. Has Microsoft has finally realized the error of their ways?

This is my second story submission to slashdot (the first being about this; it was rejected). Let's see how it pans out. :)

I don't think slashdot.org ever accepted it, heh. Ah well.

I did get it working, though, on my laptop! :)

Maybe you should have posted it on Digg instead.

I'll probably do that next time I have something to submit, heh :)

Anyway, I think the following may be what the problem was:
