reasoning about astronomy

Postby TerraFrost » Sun Oct 02, 2005 3:10 am

I was sorta thinking about it, and.. I wouldn't expect someone whose never left their room to be able to really gain an appreciation of the city they live in.

They could look outside their window using binoculars (akin to using telescopes), they could throw battery powered video camera's that transmit rf signals on cars that pass by (akin to sending out probes), and they could probably infer some surprising things (just as Sherlock Holmes, I guess, is able to infer surprising things just by looking at a crime scene), but there understanding would still probably be quite limited.

Likewise, it seems that that which can be infered from astronomy is going to be similarily limited.
