laptop hard drives as mirrors

Postby TerraFrost » Fri Feb 18, 2005 7:49 am

just got a bad laptop hard drive from the place i work at, and in an effort to turn it into a mirror (the platers are really really reflective) i took the top off. unfortunately, this wasn't a very easy process, and i got some fingerprints on it (fingerprints on hard drive platters really really stick out). after cleaning 'em off with windex, i looked around for ziplock bag to put it in. unfortunately, this reduced the visibility of the hard drive platter significantly. using saran wrap, however, has proved quite effective! it protects the platters from fingerprints and doesn't reduce the reflectivity!

/me has one of those moments of clarity where they realise what a geek they're - when reading the topic title I expected a topic on raid or some such

Mind you, i am sat with a barebone in front of me with the harddrive hanging out the side ghosting on to another while playing a Start Trek game....

I have dorky fun with my previous harddrive by plugging the power lead up to it and listening to it start.

"eeweeeeeeee............." :rotf

But other then that I treat all harddrives with care as they can be really useful for tempory space or for an extra computer. (unless they don't work) :D
Then again, all four computers in my house have two hard drives so I guess I don't have many spare.

i think the fact that you have to unplug "internal" components to move your computer is also testament to your geekdom, heh :)
