staring at something out of the ordinary is a survival instinct, for the only thing you have to fear death from is that which is out of the ordinary. that is unless, of course, you dying is an ordinary event, hehe
additionally, i would argue that mankinds desire to understand that which is weird is what makes makind what it is - it's why fire is no longer seen as strange, and why geometry and algebra are no longer seen as strange, either. of course, this line of reasoning isn't as strong as the previous one - this line of reasoning is, as i understand the term, abductive in nature, where as the previous one almost qualifies as a deductive argument, atleast imho.
