Fake. I tried that myself once (honestly) and that did not happen. It made a bad smell and there was a bit of smoke/steam emitting from the core (the actual chip) but did not jump out of the slot and looks just about the same (didn't even melt).

Of course, there might be differences between what the two of you did, but it pretty much looks like it simply disappeared... and the hole in the mother board (I thought it was a hole he showed us?) could have been used to fake it like you said.

Well, I'm not totally settled on it, real or fake.
