Based on this article, I guess one vendor is doing them (most laptops use fluorescent bulbs as their backlights). From the article...

How much battery life does the LED Backlighting save?
30 minutes to an hour vs. the older models. (Including savings from Santa Rosa, so there's no way to distinguish the improvements individually.)

Is there a full brightness warmup?
No, its...

instantly at full brightness, unlike traditional LCDs.

Here's another advancement in flat panel displays:

A liquid that changes colour when exposed to a magnetic field could cheaply replace the colour components in conventional LCD monitors, claim US researchers.

The liquid contains tiny iron oxide particles coated with plastic. It is cheap and easy to make, and could also be used in flexible, rewritable, electronic paper, the researchers say.
