The secret mission of Jericho Walker

OOC: Roadkill has asked me to play wit his character until he can take care of it again. Given that Rao plays sometimes with Degamra, and Wolfie has an armie of characters, I think it is ok, but tell me if it's not.

If it was a dream or a joke, it was lasting to long. Not only this world seemed to be infested of strange creatures, but there was also strange arts, like magic. His training in the Monsastery had convinced them of the reality of the world surrounding him. His wounds for not being attentive in the training had hurted, and the scars still reminded him so. But he had learn also new skills. Still he was marvelous at the few spells he had managed to master.

But someting had not changed in this world. Somehow he had been chosen for one of the most difficult mission. He was now riding in a dark horse, and covered by a dark cape. Too dark... even unnaturally dark in this world were the unnatural seemed quite natural. But it was fine, for he did not want to be seen. In this mission he jknew he would find no friend to support him. No wingman, no awacs informing him of the situation... only a long journey that could end with a cruel death.

But somehow it made all the sense to him. The wizards of the Monastery had told him about the story of the world. And during his training he have had the opportunity to come in support of small villages raided by orcs. This was a fight very similar to the one he had always dreamed to fight for in his original world. The fight for freedom against foes of irrational cruelty. And he was determnined to succeed.

Before joining the Armed Forces, Jericho had spent his childhood in close contact with nature. He had spent countless afternoons and evening following his grandfather and learning from him about the traces of the different animals, the language of the birds, how to start a fire without matches in a rainy day or even how to use the wind to know more about the forest, than what the forest know about you. At that time everything had been a hobby. A passion encouraged by his parents as a way of keeping him in good health and away from trouble.

But he had never thought he would come to a world like this where those skills could turn to be the difference between life and death. Somehow he was sensing danger, so he dismounted and tensed his arc. Padding his horse he tied it in a hidden place, and he looked around. He could hear nervous animal activity. He could smell a bear not far away, and he could see the trace of a fox that had passed just by that point running away from something a few minutes ago. But there was something else in the air. A scent of an animal he did not know about…

Five orcs had gathered in a clear of the forest marked by a big stone. They were quite small, but hey were agile, and any expert observer could have said they were neatly equipped, as an elite force.

Orc1: Well I say we keep on searching and someone stay here to report
Orc2: Are you always so bright? Let’s do what you say, but you stay and report, and we will make sure you are buried properly.
Orc1: Stop being sarcastic, that will not take us anywhere.
Orc3: Reporting that we have nothing to report will definitely take us somewhere we don’t want to be.
Orc4: But we do have something to report: All our spies and explorers near Khadrim have vanished!
Orc3: so we don’t know anything! Do you think that is going to be acceptable for Lord Garn?
Orc4: We may tell him they followed Khadrim army towards the Empire of Tao Lu. That’s what we expected them to report, didn’t we?
Orc2: Do you think he would believe that? You cannot lie to him. We don’t know anything!
Orc4: Let’s tell him there’s nothing yet to report. That is not a lie!
Orc1: Another “smart” fool! That will get you killed before you pronounced the last word.
OrcCaptain: Stop this nosense. We will stay here and ask Lord Garn what he wants us to do. There is something strange about not finding no one of our explorers. We found the bodies of 20 of them in the way to Hebian, and the fight scene had the unmistakable traces of Degamra. What is strange is that we did not find any of the other explorers, either dead or alive. Looks like Magic, or even worst as highly skilled and coordinated assassination. I fear that we were misinformed that Khadrim was moving in support of the Samurians. We have not seen any troop movements in that direction.

A sound of something moving was heard to the north of the group.

Orc1: What was that?
Orc2: Damned, must be Lord Garn, He may have heard us
OrcCaptain: Don’t be stupid, you would be dead if that was the case. Must be an animal. You too go and see what’s going on.

The two orcs entered the dense forest in the direction of the noises.

“Nothing here” they shouted after a few minutes.“ok, keep looking just in case” answered the captain

The three remaining orcs fixed their eyes in the spot where the other two had entered the forest. They heard one of them. “Are you gone to stay immobile the whole evening? Go and check that side! Then, suddenly, they heard the sound of something falling to the ground.

The orc captain took out his sword: “You two! What’s going on?” nobody answered. Can you hear me? Nothing.

He walked into the forest and the other two orcs followed him cautiously. They found the still warm corpses of their companions. Both with knives expertly thrown that had caused them immediate death. The orc captain was an experienced ranger. He laid to the ground asking the two other orcs to do the same. “He tricked us… he is only one, and he lies south of us, not north as he made us believe. He is good. Not a noise, not a scent. But he is alone and you are after all not as fools as you look when you talk. Go and get him. I will wait for Lord Garn”

The two orc explorers carefully moved southwards, aware that the wind was in their backs, so the enemy will know about them without them being able to smell him.

Meanwhile, the Captain observed the knives.
“No marks” I think this is definitely a trap. They are trying to blind us from knowing about their movements. Lord Garn must know about this".
He stealthily returned to the stone. When he arrived, he found a dark figure in dark robes, probably a drow. The Orc Captain kneeled. “Lord Garn”

Ace was in doubt. He was sure he could have taken the orcs one by one without endangering his main mission. In fact only the Orc Captain was left, know that thew two remaining explorers had made the mistake of coming to a few feets of the tree where he awaited, and had given him an easy target.

But now this new dark figure seemed powerful, and he was not sure to be able to handle it. The dark figure had appeared like in mid-air.

In one side he knew his main mission was not to be endangered, but in the other side, he had to avoid the spies reporting contradicting news about Khadrim.

“You are late!, where are the rest?” asked Lord Garn.
“ Milord, I am afraid…” those were the last words of the Orc Captain as the whispering of an arrow cut the air and sliced the orcs neck.

A second arrow rushed to the drow, but he quickly dodged it.

Ace understood he rather escape. Silently he approached his horse, and then he silently approached the road. Just when he reached the road, he saw the gleam of a blade. He saw it only for a fraction of a second. But he did not need more. With a jump he mounted and he galloped towards the mountains.

While he ride, for a while he could see the figure of the drow, trying to catch up, moving fast through the forest. But fortunately the horse was quicker.

As he arrived near the mountains, he knew it was time to say farewell to the horse. He wrote a secret message telling about the episode, and let it go back to Khadrim.

Meanwhile Lord Garn found himself with similar thoughts as his unlucky servants have had before: “Stupid orcs! Just a lonely inexperienced ranger! They deserve to dye” and then thinking again: “I cannot spend days gathering the reports from our units in the field… that was their work. Anyway Khadrim will be an easy battle. Two million of us will crush the city as the fool Erelen tries to defend the Samurians. I’d rather go to the first front and do something more useful than hunting spies”

Ace climbed through the rocks until the entrance of the cave.

Ughh, this is smelly! He had dreaded to find orcs or the mysterious drow guarding the entrance, but not that terrible smell that was stunning his senses. Let be this odor the only obstacle I face! He thought as he entered the cave. The cave was filled with bones and skins in putrefaction of various animals. It looked like an animal’s lair. Maybe a big bear. Nonetheless he could not smell anything. But he was worried. He looked for a trace, and there was no trace of animals. Nonetheless, the floor of the cave and its walls in some parts were kind of eroded and… Well it looked as if the erosion had taken place fast and recently. That was definitely a mistery…

There was no time to wonder so he took out his torch, and try the trick Serpentes had taught him. Serpentes said he only used it for scaring kids, but Ace thought it was quite useful in a world without matches… He concentrated and ROAM, a small flame burnt through the torch.

Well, now with light things looked a little different. The cave looked more like what he had expected to find: A corridor set on stone with pictures depicting battles of the past, and columns flanking the way. Only, that it seemed as if a over sized and over strengthened six year old had crossed the corridor. Most of the columns were now damaged and someone had painted over the old images with strong colors, as if trying to mock the pictures… The floor still looked the same, full of bones of animals and traces as of someone walking with metal shoes over a wooden floor. Only that the floor of the cave was on stone!

He kept walking to the main hall. The Hall, which was supposed to be a small temple to Adanos, was completely ruined, and bones and other strange things piled on the wall. It would be difficult to fin the secret door among that many trash. Beside, the odor was terrible. He was really wondering what could be the creature or creatures who would have cause such a smell and such a mess.

Among the many trush and debrish of the Hall, he found a lot of shiney objects. Some of them were real gold, but others were tasteless and useless copper objects. He also found a longsword that seemed to have been made in another age. It had as well some runes writen i its still sharp and ahiney blade, runes that reminded him of those he had seen in the Monastery of Fire.

He found it all quite funny. It all looked as a fairy tale. How there could be a creature with such strength, but at the same time with such a bad taste and likeness for destruction/. He reminded about one book he had read in his childhood... Thought twice.
The Trolls! What if the entrance for the secret passage had become a lair for a troll? He had never seen one, but he also thought he did not wanted to see one right now neither. fF the tales were right, he will come back to the cave when the sun raised. That moment was near! Hestarted frenetically to look among the debris of the Ground for the mosaic of Adanos. He finally found it. He pressed the little tile that made Adanos right eye and magically , the northern wal transformed itself in a waterfall. No time to waste. He jumped into the water and found himself in another cave corridor. The new corridor was not ornamented at all. Bare rock everywhere except in the floor, where the water of the waterfall slowly moved forward...

Ace advanced quickly through the corridor. Not much later he saw a curious thing. Incrusted in one of the walls, there was a crystal that shone with light. It was very beautiful so he tried to take it out of the wall. But in the moment he touched the crystal, a electric shock went through all of his body! Ouch!
Suddenly a sphere of light detached itself from the crystal and the crystal lost its light.
So these are the Will o’Wisp! That means I am on the right path!
While he kept on advancing through the corridor, he started to see more crystals, each time more numerous fixed to the walls and ceiling of the cave. Many of the creatures, curious to see a human in their realms, went out of their crystals and followed Ace, who soon found that much brightness was even more inconvenient than the previous darkness. At least it seemed that the Willo’Wisp did not felt threatened, so they let him go without more electric shocks.
Finally he arrived to the end of the corridor. The small stream of water that run through the corridor ended up in a subterraneous lake. The lake presented an magnificent view, as many Willo’Wisp had their crystals under water, and the lake shined like an enormous pool of mana. However, Ace knew it came a dreade part of his mission.
No matter how many times the magicians had assured him the magical mushrooms will allow him to breath underwater, he was still a little sceptic. He eat the mushroom and jump into the warm water. It was definitely an advantage that the energy of the small creatures did keep the water at a nice temperature. However, once in a while he felt the funny feeling of swimming through one of the electrical currents that crossed the lake allowing the Willo’Wisp to become only one mind…

Ace swam for a while, until he found the submarine corridor. As long as he advanced through the corridor, the crystals of the WilloWisp became more scarce, until the corridor was in total darkness.
The water became also cooler and he became engulfed in absolute obscurity. He hardly was able to control his panic. Nonetheless, the corridor was not that wide, so it was easy to keep swimming on the right direction even in the darkness. Finally he stared a dim light ahead. He accelerated his stroke, until finally he reached the window of light…
Just in this moment he was absorbed by a water current who pushed him through the window, and then he fell with the small cascade into a gelid pond. He rapidly swam to the pond side, and tried to keep the warmth by moving quickly.
The pond was surrounded by a forest of dark trees. He climbed to one of them to have a better view of the surroundings…
The vision was terrifying. The pond and the forest were in a small intermediary plane in the side of the mountain, but down there, like rivers of dark petrol on fire, the armies of the orcs moved through the roads of Ossilgath. Now he became aware that all the difficulties he had found until now were just a kid’s game comparing to what awaited for him now: Move through the lands of Ossilgath without being notice and get to the City of the Azraks!

with the mountian, all green vegetation finished. It would be hard to advance without being seen. He was wondering if he should wait for the night, but he knew his mission could lose its sense if he did not make it on time. . Just when he was pondering his options, great quantities of clouds started to appear and quiclkly cover the sky. Suddenly a storm broke in, and the sun was almost completely covered. THe storm looked very strong by the peaks of the mountains, but in the place where he was, it was only scary. Scary and very uncomfortable as the rain wetting his clothes made him feel the coldness of the wind. At least the storm will present him with an advantage. He started to advance covered in the darkness portrayed by the clouds...

Ace advanced for four hours covered by the darkness of the storm. The terrible lightning were worrying him. More because of the fear that they may discover, his lonely figure advancing through the desolated field, than of being struck.
For four long hours he walked under the heavy rain until he become too close to the main road. There was no way he would be able to make it through the columns of orcs that advanced in the road. He crawled cautiously to a semi burned tree that stood on a low hill near the road. From the cover of the tree he observed the road. The orcs advanced with fear in their faces. The storm over the pass of KuanPing looked definitely terrible. He was glad to have used the secret passage, even with all its rarities.
His problem was that he needed to cross to the other side of the road. As he was thinking of a diversion strategy or a camouflage, the answer came again in itself. A tall man in a dark cape, ordered the troll by his side to play the big drum he hold. The whole column made mostly of war artifacts and carriages started to move. They were moving fast, so he calculated that in one or two hours, the road would free for him to cross it. He sat under the tree, careful no to be seen. And decided to sleep. It may be his last chance in a while, and he had not slept for two days now.

Ace woke up just to se the last of the orcs moving away in the road. He was surprised he had been able to sleep there so close to danger. But also his tiredness had helped a lot. Now, stealthily he crawled in order not to be seen cross the road. With the depart of the last orcs, Ossilgath looked like a deserted land. When he felt safe enough, he stood up again and started to march with a quick pace. The bread and drinks from the elves was really marvellous, and he was feeling at full strength after all.

After a few hours he reached the outer wall of the city of Uziz. Fortunately the watch was poorly provided and he could reach the wall without much trouble. There he produced a rop and his climbing grapple…
