How shiny! "Firefly" has proven that it's actually a phoenix. Or at least, Lazarus.

The failed Fox series created by "Buffy the Vampire Slayer's" Joss Whedon will return, but not on the small screen. Vivendi Universal has picked up the rights to the series, and has given Whedon the greenlight to bring it to the silver screen.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Whedon will write and direct the new movie, making his directorial debut in the movie arena, with production scheduled to begin in 2004.

"Ever since the show went off the air, our fan base has grown even more," said Christopher Buchanan, president of Mutant Enemy. "We've had tremendous outpouring from the U.S. and Canada as well as the U.K."

Whedon said he wants to reunite the original cast as well as introduce new characters in the film. He said he will expand the concept of "Firefly" while keeping true with the original mythology (which includes no aliens).

If Whedon is succesful with a movie, he will have accomplished a unique feat in the entertainment business. After turning a failed movie franchise, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" into a hit television series, he might tun a failed television series into a hit movie franchise.

Is that shiny or what?

Ratings never picked up for the series when it ran on Fox last season. Only 12 episodes were made, and only nine aired.

A DVD set with all 12 episodes is due in December.
