Initial criticism...

Postby Rapscallion » Mon Sep 17, 2007 12:27 am

I'm sure I have no place questioning progress, but I think the new phpBB look is sorta lame. What are the benefits with this new version over the previous version?

A lot of features that phpBB 2 required MODs to add are built into phpBB 3. This means that it's a ton easier to update phpBB 3. If you have a lot of MODs installed on a phpBB 2 and then an update comes out... well, you're going to either have to to the modification by hand, and "finagle" your way through the code or you're going to have to reinstall the MODs by hand. The former is so incredibly time consuming that I just never did it and the former isn't really possible unless you kept track of the MODs which were installed (which I didn't). And that's assuming there were no MOD conflicts.

Further, just because your phpBB 2 is up-to-date doesn't mean your MODs are. So to keep your board up-to-date, you would need to not only check phpbb.com (phpBB does this for you in the ACP), but you'd also need to check the sites for each of those MODs (or the phpbb.com / phpbbhacks.com pages for those MODs). And all that assumes those MODs are still maintained. A MOD supported by one person is much more likely to be abandoned then is a package supported by ~40 people (ie. phpBB).

Long story short, eliminating the need for MODs makes life a lot easier.

Also, personally, I think anyone who thinks "the new phpBB look" is lame is just dismissing it because it looks new and they're simply not used to it. I used to think CSS was lame because it was new, different, and because I thought pure HTML was more then sufficient. Now, however, I try to use CSS almost exclusively. In fact, I think the distinction between HTML and CSS doesn't go far enough, now, and think that the web might be better if it used XML and XSL, instead.

The point I'm trying to make is that just because something is new and different doesn't mean it's lame. Use it enough and you may find yourself never wanting to go back.

Well, I suppose that's right. Actually, I think the last one looked kind of lame, too. :lila just kidding. It's all about color with me, I suppose. I figured it was better than the other. I also posted this before I read that you were trying to download the template. But thanks for the explanation. It taught me some stuff.

My only real complaint is that it can be tricky to see where one post ends and another begins.

I have difficulties getting around the forums using my default browser(Opera). On the main page, only the Tower of Babble has the text that I click on to get into the sub-forum. The rest, I have to do quick jumps to access them.

Peoples....you don't have to use the default 'prosilver' template....just go into your User Control Panel then into Board Preferences and where it says 'My board style' just select 'subsilver2' and hit 'Submit'. ;)
