there is no legal age to dip or smoke, but there is a legal age to buy dip or smoke, and that's 18

because the US decided to require that the drinking age be raised to 21 for the varrious states to recieve money for building highways.

as for why they chose 21 as opposed to, say, 18, 20, or whatever... i think that was just arbitrary.

belief that 21 year olds are more mentally mature than 18 year olds(and for the most part is true). also, with the larger percentage of drinkers and the amount that is drunk and the physiological effects of alcohol, it's less harmful if it isn't drunk until the body is done matureing(phsically). most ppl aren't physically mature at 18 but are by 21.

it has to do with the fact that smoking and bad judgement doesn't end up with a dead person on the side of the road due to impaired mental and physical abilities. and guess what, we can use the physiological argument to try to allow you mentally mature a little more.

also, it isnt only drunk driving. there are many things that aren't good to do when your judgemet is impaired because it can cause immediate harm to someone. these include things such as drunk driving, rape(both raping and being raped), stepping into the middle of the street, alcohol poisening.

why, then, are alcohol companies allowed to make commercials when tobacco companies aren't? the arguments that prevent tobacco companies from doing that seem much better suited to alcohol co's...

because it is not physically harmful for kids, of course.

Alcohol has been around for millenia, before tobacco was popular. it is a good drink, with a slightly negative effect.

perhaps because there is no min smoking age.
maybe because drinking is more socially acceptable than smoking.
it might be that perhaps smoking as a child is more physiologically damaging than drinking.

but, the point of the actual age differences is probably because of the immediate dangers to others (and yourself) that alcohol causes, especially with low mental maturity.

yeah, there is - it's 18 ;)

because it is not physically harmful for kids, of course.

so, then, why have an age limit at all on alcohol? kids aren't old enough to drive cars or otherwise do things that would be bad to do with impared judgement, whereas those old enough to drink it are. i suppose that the reason could be to prevent those from driving from drinking, but... don't we already have laws in place to prevent adults from doing that? why would those laws not work on kids, too?

Alcohol has been around for millenia, before tobacco was popular. it is a good drink, with a slightly negative effect.

yeah - that's why the prohibition targeted tobacco - 'cause they'd never target alcohol, seeing as how it's just a good drink, with a slightly negative effect. ;)

i am not 100 percent sure, but i don't think there is an actual age that u smoke illegally at. there is a min buying age for cigarretes, which is 18. but i don't believe there is a thing like with alcohol that u smoking is like u drinking in which u drinking under 21 is actually a legal infraction.
