I have not read this link yet, but what I found interesting was how much Jackson had copied from the original animated film. I had not read the books for years and had only watched the animated film more recently. When Fellowship came out, it was similar in many ways to the animated film.

Then when I re-read the books recently I noticed how much of the feature film had been taken from the animation and NOT the books. In fact I saw Jackson in an interview saying he had not read the books for years and he remembered most from the animated film as I had done.
