AFI names top 10 movies for 2004

There's sex, drugs, but no rock 'n' roll on the American Film Institute's list of official selections for the Top 10 films of the year.

"Kinsey," the drama about the titular sex researcher played by Liam Neeson, and "Maria Full of Grace," which centers on a desperate pregnant woman's decision to be a drug mule, are just two of the eclectic list of 10 films recognized by AFI.

Sports films also make a showing on the list, with the football drama "Friday Night Lights" and Clint Eastwood's boxing film "Million Dollar Baby" climbing into the ring. Also making the cut are crowd pleasers "Collateral" and "The Aviator," in addition to more cerebral fare provided by "Sideways" and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind."

Rounding out the Top 10 are the family-friendly superhero flicks "Spider-Man 2" and "The Incredibles."

The AFI Awards 2004 is unique in honoring moving pictures as a whole -- from the performers to those behind the scenes -- instead of for individual achievements.

AFI will hold a luncheon honoring the films' creative ensembles on Friday, Jan. 14 in Los Angeles.
