JMS and enterprise

This is a message from the BABYLON 5 TECH-MANUAL community
administrator:

Dear Friends,

In the August 2004 issue of "Starburst" it was reported that B5 series
creator J. Michael Straczynski was contacted by Paramount to take over
duties as Executive Producer for "Star Trek: Enterprise" starting with
the 4th season.

JMS turned down Paramount's offer, but the fact Paramount went to the
creator of Babylon 5 to help save the beleaguered Trek franchise
speaks volumes.

Not surprisingly, after having been offered the job Rick Berman and
Brannon Braga currently hold, the Trek duo split! Braga has now left
"Star Trek: Enterprise" telling reporters he wants to "take a step
back" from working on Star Trek.

With a major shake-up to the Trek Franchise coming, JMS has continued
to speak out about his feelings that Star Trek can still be saved. To
this end, JMS and Bryce (Dark Skies) Zabel have written a treatment (a
proposal for a new Trek series) which the two producers claim would
"... restore the [Star Trek] franchise in a big way", said JMS.

Could the creator of Babylon 5 save Star Trek? What kind of story
would JMS create and what kind of story would fans like to see? What
would Trek-Fan reaction be, from those Trekkies who elected to hate
Babylon 5 for the simple fact that it was not Star Trek? And has too
much damage been done, so that even "The Great Maker" could not
salvage what remains of "The Great Bird's" creation?

B5Tech will keep people up-to-date on this story. In the meanwhile,
fans can debate this startling revelation at:

Article from JMS at usenet

24/8/2004 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE: J. Michael Straczynski has clarified his involvement in the Star Trek universe on a recent post to his Usenet regarding a possible role on "Star Trek: Enterprise," and the reported story treatment he did with Bryce Zabel.

"I said that Paramount approached me about coming on board as an [executive producer], not showrunner position," Straczynski said about "Enterprise." Rick "Berman and (Brannon) Braga will still have run the thing. I didn't feel that I could function best in that arrangement."

And the new Star Trek?

"As for the treatment Bryce and I wrote for another Trek series, as I said, we wrote it on our own, not as an assignment from Paramount
