Stargate Atlantis broke records, too.

(Zap2it.com) The premiere of "Stargate Atlantis," the spinoff of the Sci Fi Channel's popular "Stargate SG-1" series, delivered some of the best ratings in the network's history.

The two-hour series premiere on Friday (July 16) drew nearly 4.2 million viewers, the biggest-ever audience for a weekly series on the cable network. (Some miniseries, such as "Taken" and "Battlestar Galactica," have averaged more viewers.)

It also marked the first time a Sci Fi series has ever delivered more than 4 million viewers and better than a 3.0 household rating (3.2). Its ratings among adults 18-49, the key demographic for advertisers, were also a network best.

"Atlantis" stars Joe Flanigan, Rainbow Sun Francks and Tori Higginson as members of a Stargate team that explores a new galaxy after finding a gate in Antarctica. The gate leads to Atlantis, which is not on Earth but has jumped to another galaxy.

The show is a spinoff of "Stargate SG-1," which recently began its third season on Sci Fi and eighth overall. "SG-1" also set record ratings with its July 9 season premiere, which averaged 3.2 million viewers.

i guess i'll post this in here, since it has to do with shows made by the sci fi channel breaking records.

Fans of The Sci Fi Channel’s new Battlestar Galactica have reason to rejoice. The network has announced today that the show’s two-hour debut last Friday was the number one cable program for the P25-54, P18-49, M25-54, M18-49 and M18-34 demographics. It also delivered the best January performance of any program in the history of the network.

With 3.1 million viewers tuning in, the show easily beat poor Star Trek: Enterprise over on broadcast network UPN, which it aired against. The dying Trek series was beaten by Galactica across the board. According to the press release, the new show outperformed Enterprise “in total viewers, P25-54 (2.2 million vs. 1.7 million) and P18-49 (1.8 million vs. 1.5 million).”

Bottom line, the show’s a hit. But that said, the next two weeks are believed to be critical in whether or not Sci Fi greenlights a second season. Series premieres always do well. The question is, how much of a drop-off in audience will Galactica encounter between now and the end of the month?

More record breaking...

New York, NY (September 27, 2005) – SCI FI blazed a ratings trail this summer, giving the Channel its best third quarter ever. Its 'SCI FI Friday' block of originals cemented the Channel as the #1 cable destination on Friday nights among P18-49 and P25-54 for the entire quarter – averaging more P25-54s than even the WB or UPN. The 'SCI FI Wednesday' block of alternative reality series also scored for SCI FI, delivering double and triple-digit increases among young adults. The Channel's Saturday action movie franchise added to the ratings bonanza with 'Pterodactyl' (August 27), which devoured over 3.1 million viewers and became the highest-rated original movie in SCI FI history.
